’O for the wings of a dove’

St Giles Church, Uley

Saturday 27 June 2015

The concert began with music by three of the great Romantic composers:-

  • Schubert's famous setting of Psalm 23, sung by all the ladies of the choir;

  • Ich harrete des Herrn, known in English as "I waited for the Lord", from Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise;

  • Three beautiful motets by Brahms;

  • and the first half ended with Mendelssohn's O for the wings of a dove.

After the interval there were further famous choral songs by Pearsall, Parry, Holst and Vaughan Williams.

Organ accompaniments and solos were played by Simon Bell, Director of Choral Music at Dean Close School, Cheltenham, and the Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum. Before coming to Gloucestershire he held appointments at Westminster Abbey, Southwell Minster and Winchester Cathedral.
